Anaheim

Area History

Today, the city of Anaheim is most known for being a contributor to California’s bustling tourism scene. Hailed as one of Orange County’s crown jewels, Anaheim is home to Disneyland—the world’s first-ever theme park and a popular attraction for visitors from all over the globe. Based on recounts and stories, early Anaheim was a lot of like one of Disneyland’s most popular areas: Frontierland.

In the mid-1850s, settlers who left the German Revolution for San Francisco were frustrated with the inflated prices of land in Northern California. Word spread of plentiful land that was considerably less expensive, so about 50 of those Germans headed south in search of a plot to call their own. For the cost of about $2 per acre, the settlers purchased 1,165 acres of coastal plains and proclaimed the area “Annaheim,” which is German for “home by the Santa Ana River.”

Long before Mickey Mouse made his way into the hearts of Southern Californians and tourists alike, the area was a haven for wine production. Included among the town’s settlers were two winemakers who thought the area’s climate and abundance of land made for ideal wine region conditions. Aided by the advent of irrigation, Anaheim wineries would soon flourish, producing as much as 1.25 million gallons of wine annually. But an unfortunate plant disease in the 1880s would destroy the vineyards, giving way to a budding orange and citrus business that would remain the city’s chief industry—that is until Walt came calling.

Disneyland Park, originally dubbed Disneyland, opened to the public on July 17, 1955. Since that time, the Disneyland complex has seen tremendous growth, adding an additional theme park (Disney California Adventure), hotels for various budgets, and an entertainment district with shopping and dining.

The late 20th and early 21st centuries saw populations continue to swell with more than 350,000 people now calling Anaheim home.

Entertainment/things to do

If there’s one item that tops the list for things to do in Anaheim, it’s a trip to Disneyland. Per reports, Disneyland Park welcomes more than 18 million visitors annually. The family favorite features eight distinct sections, each themed as a different “land,” along with other backstage areas scattered across about 85 acres. The Disneyland complex’s newer theme park, Disney California Adventure, opened to the public in 2001. This park celebrates the history and culture of California, with eight themed lands of its own and attractions for guests of all ages.

If you’re looking for thrills without the heights, Anaheim proudly plays host to two professional sports teams. Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels play their home games in Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Nicknamed “The Big A,” the stadium is the fourth-oldest active stadium in Major League Baseball and has quirky design cues like artificial rocks and geysers beyond the left-center field fence. The National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks have played at the Honda Center (formerly The Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim) since their start in 1993. Originally named the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in a nod to the Disney movie of the same name, the team has made the playoffs 14 times and took home the Stanley Cup in 2007.

For a more serene setting, take in the sights at the historic Yorba Regional Park. This linear park with picturesque views is situated at the mouth of the Santa Ana Canyon and stretches more than 140 acres. Enjoy family picnics, fishing, model boat sailing and biking through the park’s trails.

Anaheim’s beer scene is one not to miss, with tasting rooms from larger breweries with national distribution down to the local guys. Anaheim also has tons of outdoor farmers’ markets, craft shows and shopping spots for a little retail therapy.

The Anaheim economy and what you need to know about moving there

Given its location in Southern California, Anaheim has a Subtropical Mediterranean climate, which generally means warm winters and hot summers with very little annual rainfall.

The city’s proximity to several airports and two major ports of call, interstate access and robust public transit set up that includes buses and trains, makes traveling to, from and within Anaheim easier than some other cities of a similar size.

When it comes to the economy, tourism is the city’s primary driver. As you might expect, The Walt Disney Company is the city’s largest employer. Not only does the tourism industry directly supply jobs to Anaheim residents, but many of the city’s shops, bars and restaurants significantly rely on visitors’ dollars. In addition to enticing millions of leisure travelers, Anaheim has a booming meetings and conventions market. The Anaheim Convention Center is the largest exhibit facility on the country’s west coast and features 1.6 million square feet of total space.

Outside of tourism, Anaheim Canyon is an industrial area that is the largest industrial district in all of Orange County with around 2,600 businesses that employ about 55,000 workers. There are a variety of large, international corporations that have a corporate office in Anaheim, including AT&T, General Dynamics and Hewlett Packard.

The Anaheim City School district operates all elementary schools within the city, while the Anaheim Union High School District handles the schools that cater to older children. Parents and academic rating systems often praise the array of programs offered at many schools within the Anaheim district, lauding the schools’ ability to prepare students for the next level.
